John and Sarah meet when both grab for the remaining pair of cashmere gloves at Bloomie's. They're each shopping for their significant others, but the chemistry between them is palpable. When their purchase at the department store wins them a night on the town, they begin thinking that they've met their soulmate. Sarah is cautious and, when John asks for her phone number, writes it on a copy of Love in the Time of Cholera, which she sells. John writes his on a US$5 bill which Sarah quickly spends. If they are meant to be together, she reckons, these items will come back into their lives. Years go by and, on the eve of each of their respective weddings, they decide to go in search of the other.
