Fast Retailing Co, Japan’s largest clothing retailer, yesterday said it had signed an agreement with Uni-President Hankyu Department Store (統一阪急百貨) to bring the much-awaited casual wear brand “Uniqlo” to Taiwan by the third quarter.
Located in Taipei’s Xinyi District (信義) and within walking distance of the Taipei City Hall MRT station, Uni-President Hankyu is owned by the Uni-President Group (統一集團) and is set to open during the third quarter.
The Uniqlo outlet will be located in basement one of the department store and cover 1,450m², the company said in a statement.
The outlet will boast a wide variety of men and women’s apparel that match those from large-scale Uniqlo stores in Japan, the statement said.
Fast Retailing said in February it would invest ¥430 million (US$4.8 million) to establish a Taiwanese subsidiary in March to develop a network of Uniqlo stores here.
The statement released yesterday said the subsidiary was set up in April with total capital of NT$150 million (US$4.7 million), which matches the February announcement.
Fast Retailing has more than 910 stores around the world as of February, with 125 outlets located overseas. It has Uniqlo outlets in China, Hong Kong, the US, France and a few other countries and is planning to expand into India, Australia and Thailand.
Uniqlo opened global flagship stores in New York’s Soho shopping district in 2006 and on London’s Oxford Street in 2007.
