Tthe nation’s first immigrant legislator, Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) legislator-at-large Lin Li-chan questioned Minister of the Interior Chen Wei-zen in fluent Hoklo in the Internal Administration Committee on Thursday last week. Green camp lawmakers could not help commending her, saying that her Hoklo is more fluent than that of President Ma Ying-jeou.
According to the Formosa News channel, when Lin questioned Chen on Thursday last week on soil liquefaction, a difficult subject, she spoke fluent Hoklo throughout her question time, which compelled Chen to also speak Hoklo when he answered her questions. Lin immigrated from Cambodia and was married to her husband in Changhua 19 years ago, and Hoklo was the first language she learned after coming to Taiwan. She then continued to improve herself, and now not only can she speak Hoklo, she can also speak Mandarin.
