The tale of Wu Gang is one of several lunar myths in Chinese culture, alongside Chang’e and the Jade Rabbit. It first appeared in early Tang dynasty writings (618–907 CE), when Daoist immortality practices were popular.
Wu Gang was said to be a man who desired eternal life and sought to learn the secrets of the Dao. But he was impatient and careless in his studies, always looking for shortcuts. That’s why the Jade Emperor punished him with an endless task: to cut down a self-healing osmanthus tree on the moon.
The story is often compared to the Greek myth of Sisyphus and its theme of endless labor and the search for meaning in hardship. Yet Wu Gang’s punishment was not simply cruelty. It was a lesson. His repeated chopping became a meditation on patience and cycles and shows that the longest road may be the true path to the Dao.
During the Mid-Autumn Festival, families gather to admire the full moon and enjoy the fragrance of blooming osmanthus. The blossoms are often seen as a heavenly sign of immortality and renewal. In them, people remember Wu Gang. His axe still swings on the moon, yet his spirit is at peace. The flowers remind us that beauty is short-lived but always returns.
