    Spanish mayor builds eight-meter

    Thursday, Jul 03, 2008,Page 15

Che’s son, Camilo Guevara, second left, and the mayor of Oleiros, Angel Garcia Seoane, left, pose in front of the monument with its creators, Karol William, second right, and Juan Quintanilla, right, on June 28, 2008, in Oleiros, northwestern Spain.

Che Guevara’s face is one of the 20th century’s most iconic images, adorning posters in student bedrooms and T-shirts across the world. But not content with this, the mayor of a small Spanish town decided the guerrilla fighter deserved to be commemorated in style.

Angel Garcia Seoane, an independent who governs Oleiros in Galicia, secretly used 179,000 euros (NT$8,600,000) of public money to build an eight-meter high statue of Guevara. Conscious, perhaps, that the town’s residents might be concerned by this use of council money, Seoane arranged to have the work carried out at night. The figure was unveiled last week.

Seoane claims to be a personal friend of Fidel Castro, whose family was Galician. He hopes the statue will not only be seen by locals but also by airplane passengers flying over Oleiros.

News of the statue, created by two Cuban artists, was revealed not in the local press but by the Cuban daily Granma.

Seoane said Guevara deserved such a monument because he was “a soldier of freedom, an international guerrilla aid worker, a dreamer of feasible utopias and a symbol of all the world’s revolutionaries.”

But many of the town’s 32,000 residents are less enthused. Pablo Cobin, leader of the conservative Popular Party (PP) in Oleiros, said: “This is a waste of money, a pet project of the mayor’s and an act of arrogance.”

The PP claims Seoane may have breached legal rules because the contract for the statue was granted through a Cuban arts institute.

Seoane was unrepentant. “If it were a statue of Christ or the Virgin Mary there would not be a single protest round here, God damn them,” he said.

There is already a six-meter-tall Guevara statue in Barcelona.

    SAY WHAT?

The word pet can be used to describe something that’s very well liked. Hence a pet project is a project that one cherishes greatly and a pet grandchild is a grandparent’s favorite grandchild. Also a pet name is a nickname given to a loved one to express affection.

For example: “I call my wife by the pet name Chili Pepper because she’s the spice of my life. We get on very well. I wasn’t even mad after she squandered $10,000 of mine on a silly pet project she had to build a boat for her pet grandchild.”

    OUT LOUD
    Claire: What are you doing?

Phil: I’m cleaning up after my roommates for the third time this week. I can’t stand having dirty dishes in the sink.

Claire: You shouldn’t complain too much. I’ve never met anyone with as many pet peeves as you.

Phil: Perhaps, but you can’t deny the importance of cleanliness.

Claire: There’s a difference between being clean and being a neat freak.

A pet peeve is something that bothers someone more than most other things. For example, “Al’s pet peeve is people who switch lanes without using their blinkers.”
