AU Optronics Corp (AUO, 友達光電), Taiwan’s largest maker of liquid-crystal displays (LCD), plans to build two 11th-generation factories in central Taiwan, the most-advanced facilities in the country.
Hsinchu-based AUO will also build two 10th-generation facilities in the Erlin (二林) district of the Central Science Park, the Cabinet said in a statement late yesterday.
Later generation designations indicate larger sheets of LCD glass, allowing the manufacturer to make bigger screens for use in TVs at a lower cost per display. The Cabinet said on Aug. 27 that AUO would invest NT$400 billion (US$12.5 billion) in four factories with plans to hire 10,000 workers.
AUO’s facility would overtake Sharp Corp’s 10th-generation factory to have the largest LCD panels in the world. Larger rival Samsung Electronics Co is considering a venture with Sony Corp to also build an 11th-generation plant, the Korea Times reported on July 11.
AUO gained 5.6 percent to NT$37.5 yesterday, compared with a 2.35 percent advance by the TAIEX.
Among the rows of vibrators, rubber torsos and leather harnesses at a Chinese sex toys exhibition in Shanghai this weekend, the beginnings of an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven shift in the industry quietly pulsed. China manufactures about 70 percent of the world’s sex toys, most of it the “hardware” on display at the fair — whether that be technicolor tentacled dildos or hyper-realistic personalized silicone dolls. Yet smart toys have been rising in popularity for some time. Many major European and US brands already offer tech-enhanced products that can enable long-distance love, monitor well-being and even bring people one step closer to

Now it wants to go beyond production and emerge as a chip design powerhouse too, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said. “I am pleased to announce the largest IC (integrated circuit) Design Park in Southeast Asia, that will house world-class anchor tenants and collaborate with global companies such as Arm [Holdings PLC],”

Sales in the wholesale sector also grew last month by 4.6 annually, mainly due to the business opportunities for emerging applications related to artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing technologies, the ministry said in a report. The ministry forecast that retail, and food and beverage sales this month would retain their growth momentum as the former would benefit from Tomb Sweeping Day
