The Legislative Yuan today passed amendments imposing prison sentences of seven years to life for people who undermine the fairness of sports lottery games, resulting in death.
The amendments to the Sports Lottery Issuance Act (運動彩券發行條例) also state that people who cause serious injuries under such circumstances would face a prison sentence of three to 10 years.
Those found guilty of offenses resulting in a death or serious injury would also face fines of NT$20 million to NT$50 million (US$677,300 to US$1.69 million).

Also passed was an amendment adding "inducement" to the list of illegal means of undermining fairness, along with existing methods such as violence, coercion and fraud.
The Executive Yuan in March passed the bills for legislative approval. On June 2, they were reviewed with other proposed amendments and were supported by the ruling and opposition parties.
Today's amendments were passed without objection from attending lawmakers.
The amendments were drafted to align with similar regulations in the Sports Industry Development Act (運動產業發展條例), which impose the same penalties on those who obstruct the fairness of sports competitions using violence, coercion, fraud, inducement or other illegal means, resulting in death or serious injury.
A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Hualien County in eastern Taiwan at 7pm yesterday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. The first tropical storm of the year in the western North Pacific, Wutip (蝴蝶), has formed over the South China Sea and is expected to move toward Hainan Island off southern China, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said today.
