In a far away kingdom, the stepmother queen devised a scheme to capture the children of the former queen. Left with no choice, the former queen prayed to the gods for deliverance. In response, the divine golden ram, Chrysomallos, was sent to their aid. The brother and sister mounted the sacred creature and fled the execution grounds, crossing mountains and straits. Yet as they traversed the sea, the sister tragically fell and perished in the waters. The ram did not pause. It continued forward in unwavering flight. The brother eventually reached the far shore in safety and, in gratitude for divine grace, offered the golden ram to Zeus. The ram ascended into the heavens as the constellation Aries. The golden fleece left behind in the mortal realm would later become the object of countless heroic pursuits.
The moment the golden ram rose to the sky corresponds with what may be called Earth’s energetic “New Year.” The season of Aries marks the beginning of spring — awakening, birth, emergence. This resonates with the ram’s relentless forward motion, its refusal to turn back. And the golden fleece that stirred contention mirrors the essential trait carried by Aries: a force of momentum igniting from within, urging us forward without fear — to grow upward, to expand outward.
As mentioned in my previous column, when we speak of zodiac signs, we are not referring only to those born in a particular month, but to every reader. The 12 signs are archetypal qualities each of us encounters in our lifetime. Like the turning of the seasons, they circulate continuously through our experience. During the month of Aries, we are all invited to sense where this particular current of energy resonates within us.

As for the “Sun sign” defined by birth dates, those born between March 21 and April 19 embody this energy more vividly. They carry the essence of the Aries month with greater intensity. Yet what is even more intriguing is this: when you encounter people of different zodiac signs in your life, they arrive bearing the energy of their respective months — correcting, assisting or propelling you forward, accompanying you through chapters both long and brief.
The energy of Aries is catalytic. It resembles the silent force within a seed buried in soil — indescribable, difficult to dissect, yet unmistakably present. This energy is not calm or gentle. It carries restlessness. Though no grand movement has yet occurred, you can sense the brewing just before the earth breaks open. Through this force, we bid farewell to winter’s stagnation and chill, to the version of ourselves that had lost direction. In the month of Aries, the Earth feels newly alive — more precisely, life begins again after a year of wandering and resting. The things we wish to do, the direction we long to take, begin to clarify. Even if nothing has yet materialized, the motivation and conviction are already in place.
This is a month particularly suited for making decisions — decisions infused with hope and belief. At this time, such choices need not even rest upon practical evidence. For in this month, we are infants; we are seeds. Everything is possible. Do not confine your own potential.
It is also an ideal period to cultivate an exercise routine. The kinetic force of Aries makes it difficult to remain still. By adjusting one’s schedule and increasing physical activity, the body and mind begin to flow with this energy, enhancing vitality and inviting good fortune. Moreover, if during this month you find yourself frequently interacting with Aries individuals, perhaps your subconscious — and the universe itself — is urging you to act. You already know the direction within your heart. Do not delay.
In terms of individual signs, Pisces and Virgo may benefit especially this month by harnessing Aries energy. Pisces can untangle long-standing mental constraints, opening the way for a meaningful financial opportunity or much-needed resources. Virgo, meanwhile, can use this momentum to set plans in motion — projects once stalled, revised, or left waiting may finally begin to turn, bringing notable support to career and partnerships.
As for the other signs, cherish this infant-like purity of life force and faith. For throughout the year, only this one month carries such unfiltered potential.

A recent report from the Environmental Management Administration of the Ministry of Environment highlights a perennial problem: illegal dumping of construction waste. In Taoyuan’s Yangmei District (楊梅) and Hsinchu’s Longtan District (龍潭) criminals leased 10,000 square meters of farmland, saying they were going to engage in horticulture. They then accepted between 40,000 and 50,000 cubic meters of construction waste from sites in northern Taiwan, charging less than the going rate for disposal, and dumped the waste concrete, tile, metal and glass onto the leased land. Taoyuan District prosecutors charged 33 individuals from seven companies with numerous violations of the law. This
What is the importance within the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) of the meeting between Xi Jinping (習近平), the leader Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文), the leader of the KMT? Local media is an excellent guide to determine how important — or unimportant — a news event is to the public. Taiwan has a vast online media ecosystem, and if a news item is gaining traction among readers, editors shift resources in near real time to boost coverage to meet the demand and drive up traffic. Cheng’s China trip is among the top headlines, but by no means
As mega K-pop group BTS returns to the stage after a hiatus of more than three years, one major market is conspicuously missing from its 12-month world tour: China. The omission of one of the group’s biggest fan bases comes as no surprise. In fact, just the opposite would have been huge news. China has blocked most South Korean entertainment since 2016 under an unofficial ban that also restricts movies and the country’s popular TV dramas. For some Chinese, that means flying to Seoul to see their favorite groups perform — as many were expected to do for three shows opening
Apr. 13 to Apr. 19 From 17th-century royalty and Presbyterian missionaries to White Terror victims, cultural figures and industrialists, Nanshan Public Cemetery (南山公墓) sprawls across 95 hectares, guarding four centuries of Taiwan’s history. Current estimates show more than 60,000 graves, the earliest dating to 1642. Besides individual tombs, there are also hundreds of family plots, one of which is said to contain around 1,000 remains. As the cemetery occupies valuable land in the heart of Tainan, the government in 2018 began asking families to relocate the graves to make way for development. That
