LETTERS: Be more sincere, Ma
Tuesday, Oct 30, 2007, Page 8
I fully agree with President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) when he says that the inscript on the urn of Ma Ying-jeou's (馬英九) father urn only mentions the great unified China dream. What Chen is saying is the truth and apparently it hurts some people.
I would like to remind Ma's spokesman Luo Chih-chiang (羅智強) that when Ma says he has strong roots in Taiwan, it sounds like a lie, and he should not be surprised to get a strong response.
I do not agree with Luo that Ma's stance on Taiwanese sovereignty is clear. His stance only creates confusion about what the Republic of China is, what "one China" is and what Taiwan is.
Forgive me, Mr Luo, but when you speak about the "Taiwanese tradition of showing respect to the dead," you should not forget your very first responsibility -- to show respect to the living -- and not fool them with beautiful stories.
