Lien's change of heart
Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Lien Chan (連戰) said in a seminar on cross-strait relations in Boston ("Nation deserves role on world stage, Lien says," Oct. 19, page 3) that Taiwanese people feel frustrated and even outraged by Taiwan's repeated setbacks in seeking representation in major international organizations.
Unfortunately, Lien did not point out the important fact that these setbacks are caused mainly by China. In this regard, he did not even mention the word "China" at all. Is Lien too timid or does he have other considerations?
As a matter of parity, he did not mention the "ROC" either. He was politically correct, at least in the US, to use "Taiwan" instead of the "ROC" in reference to the island country. Is Lien also supporting name rectification for Taiwan now? I wouldn't be surprised if he is.
After all, Lien first criticized the constitutional changes proposed by President Chen Shui-bian (

The moron of Malaysia
Once again, the world is subjected to the senile ravings of the Malaysian prime minister ("Mahathir airs virulent anti-Semitism," Oct. 17, page 1). The leader of this Muslim country, putting his few brain cells to work (misfiring neurons and all), has been given the opportunity to share with the world his lunatic visions. He has determined that the "Jews rule the world."
What a surprise and insult this must be to the leaders of Russia, China, India, Europe and so on who are denigrated as mere puppets. Yet this arrogant fool thinks that it is the Muslims who are being insulted. He didn't even bother to use the fig leaf of "Israelis" to focus his venomous anti-Semitic exasperation. How stupid the non-Muslim world is, not to see eye to eye with this intellectual giant.
How idiotic the American people are, blindly dying for the Jews. With leaders of such caliber as Mahathir, the Jews of the world can breathe a sigh of relief. This kind of brainless leadership is truly a gift from Allah.
Innocent Muslims are suffering "oppression and humiliation" because an unfair world has branded them as terrorists. How short-sighted and obstinate the world is. And merely because Muslims have engaged in terrorist acts in Russia, China, India and the US, to name but a few. How dare the world condemn these holy martyrs?
Poor Mahathir! Poor Muslims! Those sneaky, nefarious Jews "invented ... human rights and democracy (news to the Greeks) so that persecuting them would appear to be wrong." This is the intellectual world of Mahathir and his Muslim cronies at the Organization of the Islamic Conference.
Human rights and democracy are potent and dangerous enemies to such Muslims.
Standing before the murderous tyrants, unelected dictators and corrupt monarchs of the Muslim world, Mahathir was in excellent company. These leaders, the intellectual flower of the Muslim world, responded to these views with an ovation. It was music to their ears. It wasn't they who were the enemy of Islam, but those stubborn Jews who simply refused to fade from the pages of history.
How did the Jews manage to accomplish such feats? These underhanded people used a secret weapon, "thinking," apparently more powerful than nuclear weapons. How unfair!
After this tirade, he accused the Jews of arrogance. Such wonderful irony! Besides, why not be arrogant when a few million people are able to "rule the world?"
He did suggest that terrorism in Israel should cease, not because it was morally indefensible, but because for 50 years it had failed to produce the desired results, in spite of brilliant thinkers like Mahathir himself. How unacceptable!
America was also attacked, although not by name, for "bring[ing] down our governments." How dare these Christian puppets remove a Muslim dictatorship? So what if the Iraqi people want them to stay in Iraq?
So what if the Muslim masses yearn for freedom and try to escape from Islamic countries like Syria, Iran and Saudi Arabia? Perhaps they too have been brainwashed by those clever Jews.
Mahathir's clever conclu-sion: "1.3 billion Muslims cannot be defeated by a few million Jews." What he failed to per-ceive, comprehend or address, is why 1.3 billion righteous Muslims cannot defeat a few million Jews. Then again, he lacks those coveted Jewish brains.

Recently, China launched another diplomatic offensive against Taiwan, improperly linking its “one China principle” with UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 to constrain Taiwan’s diplomatic space. After Taiwan’s presidential election on Jan. 13, China persuaded Nauru to sever diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Nauru cited Resolution 2758 in its declaration of the diplomatic break. Subsequently, during the WHO Executive Board meeting that month, Beijing rallied countries including Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Belarus, Egypt, Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, Laos, Russia, Syria and Pakistan to reiterate the “one China principle” in their statements, and assert that “Resolution 2758 has settled the status of Taiwan” to hinder Taiwan’s
Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s (李顯龍) decision to step down after 19 years and hand power to his deputy, Lawrence Wong (黃循財), on May 15 was expected — though, perhaps, not so soon. Most political analysts had been eyeing an end-of-year handover, to ensure more time for Wong to study and shadow the role, ahead of general elections that must be called by November next year. Wong — who is currently both deputy prime minister and minister of finance — would need a combination of fresh ideas, wisdom and experience as he writes the nation’s next chapter. The world that
Can US dialogue and cooperation with the communist dictatorship in Beijing help avert a Taiwan Strait crisis? Or is US President Joe Biden playing into Chinese President Xi Jinping’s (習近平) hands? With America preoccupied with the wars in Europe and the Middle East, Biden is seeking better relations with Xi’s regime. The goal is to responsibly manage US-China competition and prevent unintended conflict, thereby hoping to create greater space for the two countries to work together in areas where their interests align. The existing wars have already stretched US military resources thin, and the last thing Biden wants is yet another war.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, people have been asking if Taiwan is the next Ukraine. At a G7 meeting of national leaders in January, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida warned that Taiwan “could be the next Ukraine” if Chinese aggression is not checked. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has said that if Russia is not defeated, then “today, it’s Ukraine, tomorrow it can be Taiwan.” China does not like this rhetoric. Its diplomats ask people to stop saying “Ukraine today, Taiwan tomorrow.” However, the rhetoric and stated ambition of Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) on Taiwan shows strong parallels with
