The second Computex Taipei design and innovation (d&i) awards yesterday were dominated by local companies, with five products winning gold from a field of 20 semi-finalists.
The five were Acer Aspire 3935 Notebook by Acer Inc (宏碁), DHKS-10 Dual Tray LCD Console Drawer by Hoeya Technology Inc (鋒厚), SI-24S Digital Signage System by IBASE Technology Inc (廣積), SpinQ CPU Cooler by Thermaltake Technology Co (曜越) and ZEBEX Z-3130BT Handy Bluetooth CCD Barcode Scanner by ZEBEX Industries Inc (巨豪).
These products can now bear the “Taiwan Good Design” label.
“The surprise winners in this year’s Computex Taipei d&i awards represent a fresh variety of creations,” the multi-national panel of judges said at an award ceremony hosted by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and Taipei Computer Association (TCA).
“An amazing development has taken place and the future of Taiwanese design looks promising,” the panel said.
Although the judges did not award the Green Award this year, they urged companies to work in this special field.
This year’s d&I awards were organized by the German iF International Forum Design and TAITRA and were open to all exhibitors at Computex Taipei 2009 and all registered information technology firms in Taiwan.
A total of 147 entries were submitted by companies from the US, South Korea, China and Taiwan. Germans Gerhard Seizer and Marc Nagel, Hiroaki Tanaka from Japan, Gideon Loewy from Denmark and Lawrence Weng (翁振宇) from Taiwan chose the winning products.

Sales in the retail, and food and beverage sectors last month continued to rise, increasing 0.7 percent and 13.6 percent respectively from a year earlier, setting record highs for the month of March, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said yesterday. Sales in the wholesale sector also grew last month by 4.6 annually, mainly due to the business opportunities for emerging applications related to artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing technologies, the ministry said in a report.
