A man who was drinking and allegedly waving a sword outside a store in Tainan last night was shot in the back of the neck as police were attempting to subdue him, with police reporting that the weapon's discharge was accidental.
The 46-year-old man, surnamed Wu (吳), was taken to hospital for surgery and later transferred to an intensive care unit for observation.
The Yongkang Precinct of the Tainan City Police Department received a report at about 7pm last night that a man was waving a sword outside a store on Jhonghua Road.

Wu fled into the store when he saw officers approaching, the department said.
Four officers followed him into the store, drew their guns and ordered him to put down the sword, it said.
One officer attempted to subdue Wu when their gun allegedly accidentally went off, hitting Wu in the back of the neck, it said.
Wu went into cardiac arrest and was rushed to National Cheng Kung University Hospital, where he underwent surgery until 11:52pm last night, it said.
The hospital said today that his condition was unstable.
According to a preliminary investigation, Wu is a homeless person who was sitting outside the store drinking alcohol and wielding a sword, frightening passers-by.
Police said they have reported the case to the Tainan District Prosecutors’ Office for further investigation.

The Taipei City Reserve Command yesterday initiated its first-ever 14-day recall of some of the city’s civilian service reservists, who are to undergo additional training on top of refresher courses.
