Water utility prices might decrease for light users while increasing for heavy users, Taiwan Water Corp general manager Lee Chia-jung (李嘉榮) said on Friday.
Lee made the comment at a 50-year anniversary celebration for the utility in Taichung in response to questions whether water prices might rise for the first time in 30 years.
Users who consume 50m³ or less per month, which describes 92 percent of all users, would not see much of any change, Lee told reporters, adding that if anything, their prices would fall.

Such users currently pay NT$200 to NT$300 per month, and could see a price cut of about 2 percent, he said.
However, the economic environment dictates any pricing changes, which would be decided based on a Ministry of Economic Affairs panel, he added.
On the other hand, heavier users could see prices rise with their consumption level, Lee said.
Small businesses that use 50m³ to 200m³ per month might see a slight price increase, while heavy users consuming more than 1,000m³ would see a higher surcharge, he said.

Taiwan-Japan Travel Passes are available for use on public transit networks in the two countries, Taoyuan Metro Corp said yesterday, adding that discounts of up to 7 percent are available. Starlux Airlines, Taiwan’s newest international carrier, has announced it would apply to join the Oneworld global airline alliance before the end of next year. In an investor conference on Monday, Starlux Airlines chief executive officer Glenn Chai (翟健華) said joining the alliance would help it access Taiwan. A new tropical storm formed late yesterday near Guam and is to approach closest to Taiwan on Thursday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. Tropical Storm Pulasan became the 14th named storm of the year at 9:25pm yesterday, the agency said. As of 8am today, it was near Guam traveling northwest at 21kph, it said.
