The Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday eliminated top-seeded Detroit from the NBA playoffs, dominating a decisive Game 7 125-94 and are to face the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals.
Led by Donovan Mitchell’s 26 points, Cleveland’s victory makes them the last team to book their spot in this post-season’s final four, with the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs waiting in the West.
Mitchell was among four Cavs players who scored 20-plus points, along with Jarrett Allen, Evan Mobley and Sam Merrill from the bench.

The resounding win on the road in Detroit, Michigan, after missing a chance to end the series at home on Friday last week, extends an impressive playoff run for the Cavaliers, who had a mediocre regular season in which they finished fourth in the East.
“We responded with force for 48 minutes tonight,” Mitchell said. “Especially in a hostile environment ... that was that was the biggest thing, is just how do you respond? And not letting the moment become too big.”
It was heartbreak for Detroit, who comfortably topped their conference’s regular season at 60-22, yet underwhelmed throughout their stuttering playoff run and finally fizzled out in front of their home fans.
“That game sucked,” Pistons star Cade Cunningham said. “Being back home, definitely wanted to get this win in front of the fans. Reminded me of last year, losing on home court. It’s not a great feeling.”
The Cavaliers raced into a 20-point lead during the first half, their accurate shooting aided by some unusually poor and passive Pistons defense.
Detroit repeatedly missed out on rebounds and allowed uncontested three-pointer attempts, while failing to find their attacking flow.
The Pistons trailed 64-47 at the break. That meant yet another mountain to climb for a team who had already been on the brink of elimination four times this post-season.
Detroit had battled back from 3-1 down to scrape past Orlando in their first-round series and at 3-2 down against Cleveland had shown resilience to pull back one elimination game on Friday last week, but Cleveland would not let the Pistons back into this one, playing with an aggression Detroit could not match and led by an outstanding Mitchell, who suddenly seemed to be everywhere.
“He started out the game not trying to take it over, not trying to score every single basket,” Allen said. “He started the game trying to distribute the ball. I think that’s huge for a leader like him, trying to get everybody else going, and then getting himself going second.”
The Cavs led by 26 points at the end of the third quarter, as a shell-shocked home crowd began to lose hope and filter out of Little Caesars Arena.
With four minutes remaining, and the win secured, Cleveland withdrew their stars, including Mitchell.
Victory sets up Cleveland’s first conference finals appearance since 2018. Their series begins today against the Knicks, who won their semi-final against Philadelphia 4-0.
“I’m not coming out to be in New York just happy that we got here,” Mitchell said. “They’re going to be rested. We got to come in and continue the momentum, go from there.”
Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke, 29, has died, the NBA team said in a statement on Tuesday, while the family of Jason Collins, the first openly gay man to play in a major US pro sports league, announced the former Grizzlies and Brooklyn Nets player had died after a battle with brain cancer. “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke,” the Grizzlies said in a statement posted on social media. “Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten.” The statement did not provide
Mathys Tel was hero and villain as Tottenham drew 1-1 at home to Leeds United on Monday — a result that leaves their English Premier League future hanging in the balance. The Frenchman broke the deadlock early in the second half to ease the tension at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but then gave away a penalty with a reckless attempted clearance. In the dying minutes, Spurs were grateful to Antonin Kinsky, who produced an astonishing save to deny the visitors a win. Tottenham are now two points clear of 18th-placed West Ham United with just two games left this season. The
‘DONE IT ALL’: LeBron James is now out of contract with the Lakers and would head into the off season as a free agent with uncertainty swirling around his future LeBron James on Monday said he would take time to consider his future after the Los Angeles Lakers were swept out of the NBA playoffs by the Oklahoma City Thunder in what could turn out to be the final game of his career. James, 41, delivered a typically defiant performance with 24 points and 12 rebounds, but it was not enough to prevent the Lakers from falling 115-110 as the Thunder completed a 4-0 sweep in the Western Conference semi-finals series. The four-time NBA champion is now out of contract with the Lakers and would head into the off season
FRUSTRATION: Gauff smacked herself on the head with her racket before storming down the tunnel, emerging afterward to have a heated discussion with her coach Elina Svitolina on Saturday won the Italian Open after beating Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-7 (3/7), 6-2 to claim her third Rome title, while Jannik Sinner set a date with Casper Ruud in the men’s final. Ukraine’s Svitolina had not claimed a WTA 1000 title since her last victory at the Foro Italico eight years ago, but prevailed over the ever-erratic Gauff to claim her 20th tournament triumph. Saturday’s win over Gauff was her third in a row against a player in the top four of the world rankings — including Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina — ahead of the French
