Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara won a record fourth time trial title with a dominant ride at the road world championships yesterday.
Cancellara charged through the 45.8km circuit in the Australian port city of Geelong in 58 minutes, 9.19 seconds to finish one minute, 2.75 seconds ahead of Briton David Millar. Germany’s Tony Martin took bronze.
The Swiss 29-year-old, one of just a handful of riders to break the hour-mark on an overcast, sometimes gusty day, endured a nervous moment when he appeared to scrape a barrier midway through his run, but was otherwise a model of control.

“It was maybe the hardest one because before this time trial I didn’t know actually where I am really standing,” he said in a televised interview. “In the end, I was focused on my own and tried to really do what I can and that’s do a perfect ride. I think the tactic I did for this race was amazing and ... I’m happy.”
The victory added to Cancellara’s 2006, 2007 and last year’s world titles and also made him the first rider to win a fifth medal in the world time trial. The Swiss will compete in the men’s road world championship on Sunday.
“I want a bit more to enjoy this [today],” he said. “Tomorrow morning when I wake up, then it’s another day.”

Contador doping
AFP, GEELONG, Australia
Three-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador of Spain was suspended yesterday after failing a dope test in the latest drug scandal to hit cycling’s most prestigious event.
The cycling superstar, who won his third yellow jersey at the end of July’s three-week epic, announced that he had tested positive for clenbuterol, a banned substance, but blamed it on food contamination.
The International Cycling Union (UCI) swiftly announced he had been provisionally suspended after the news broke in Australia.
The UCI said clenbuterol was detected in a urine sample taken from the Spaniard on July 21, during the second rest day of the race in Pau, France, at the foot of the Pyrenees.
However, world cycling’s ruling body said that only a “very small concentration” of the drug had been found and that the case warranted “further scientific investigation” because the Cologne laboratory that detected the substance is known to be able to detect the tiniest traces of drugs.
“The rider, who had already put an end to his cycling season before the result was known, was nevertheless formally and provisionally suspended as is prescribed by the World Anti-Doping Code,” a UCI statement said.
“The concentration found by the laboratory was estimated at 50 picograms, which is 400 times less than what the antidoping laboratories accredited by WADA [World Anti Doping Agency] must be able to detect,” it said, adding that testing of a second “B” sample taken at the same time confirmed the result.
There are 1 trillion picograms in a gram.
Contador’s announcement was issued through his personal press officer as world cyclists gathered in the Australian port of Geelong for the Road Race World Championships.
“Alberto Contador is affected by a doping control at the last Tour de France on July 21, where the substance clenbuterol was found,” a statement from his press officer said. “From the time of the first communication from the UCI on Aug. 24, Alberto Contador alleged food contamination as the only possible explanation of what happened.”
The message added that Contador, one of only a handful of riders to have won the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Tour of Spain, has consulted with a number of experts, who have all agreed that the “tiny amount of clenbuterol detected” suggested that the cyclist has fallen victim to food contamination.
“The experts consulted so far have agreed also that this is a food contamination case, especially considering the number of [doping] tests undergone by -Alberto -Contador during the Tour de France,” the statement said. “This makes it possible to define precisely both the time of the emergence of the substance and the tiny amount detected, ruling out any other source or intentionality.”
It said Contador, 27, would give a press conference at the Hotel Las Artes in the Spanish town of Pinto at midday “in order to give his version of what happened to the public.”
A banned substance that can be used to help lose weight and help breathing, clenbuterol is also known to boost performance by helping to increase strength.
The day after the July test, Contador took a huge step toward an overall win by finishing in the same time as main rival Andy Schleck of Luxembourg at the summit of the Col du Tourmalet.
At the penultimate stage time trial on July 24, he secured victory with a 39-second lead on Schleck.
Although a banned substance, positive tests for clenbuterol have resulted in different outcomes for athletes in the past.
It has been shown in the past that trace elements of the drug found in the human body can be attributed to food contamination. If it is found in larger amounts, it usually points to deliberate doping.
Chinese rider Li Fuyu, who races with Lance Armstrong’s RadioShack team, was also provisionally suspended after testing positive for clenbuterol in April.
He was later given support by a Dutch anti-doping expert, Douwe de Boer, who said the amount found in his body points “clearly in the direction of a contamination” and that such a low dose would not help his performance.
Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke, 29, has died, the NBA team said in a statement on Tuesday, while the family of Jason Collins, the first openly gay man to play in a major US pro sports league, announced the former Grizzlies and Brooklyn Nets player had died after a battle with brain cancer. “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke,” the Grizzlies said in a statement posted on social media. “Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten.” The statement did not provide
Mathys Tel was hero and villain as Tottenham drew 1-1 at home to Leeds United on Monday — a result that leaves their English Premier League future hanging in the balance. The Frenchman broke the deadlock early in the second half to ease the tension at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but then gave away a penalty with a reckless attempted clearance. In the dying minutes, Spurs were grateful to Antonin Kinsky, who produced an astonishing save to deny the visitors a win. Tottenham are now two points clear of 18th-placed West Ham United with just two games left this season. The
‘DONE IT ALL’: LeBron James is now out of contract with the Lakers and would head into the off season as a free agent with uncertainty swirling around his future LeBron James on Monday said he would take time to consider his future after the Los Angeles Lakers were swept out of the NBA playoffs by the Oklahoma City Thunder in what could turn out to be the final game of his career. James, 41, delivered a typically defiant performance with 24 points and 12 rebounds, but it was not enough to prevent the Lakers from falling 115-110 as the Thunder completed a 4-0 sweep in the Western Conference semi-finals series. FRUSTRATION: Gauff smacked herself on the head with her racket before storming down the tunnel, emerging afterward to have a heated discussion with her coach Elina Svitolina on Saturday won the Italian Open after beating Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-7 (3/7), 6-2 to claim her third Rome title, while Jannik Sinner set a date with Casper Ruud in the men’s final. Ukraine’s Svitolina had not claimed a WTA 1000 title since her last victory at the Foro Italico eight years ago, but prevailed over the ever-erratic Gauff to claim her 20th tournament triumph. Saturday’s win over Gauff was her third in a row against a player in the top four of the world rankings — including Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina — ahead of the French
