People praise the wisdom of owls and the loyalty of dogs, yet pigs are rarely commended for anything. Branded as lazy and dirty, they’ve long had a bad rap. But if you scratch beneath the surface, you’ll find that pigs are among the most underestimated animals of all.
If you’ve watched the animated television series Peppa Pig, you’ll know how much pigs love muddy puddles. In truth, wallowing in mud is not a sign of poor hygiene but a matter of biological necessity. Because pigs have few functional sweat glands, they cannot regulate their body temperature like humans do. Mud, therefore, helps them cool down and shields them from parasites. Pigs are actually quite particular about cleanliness, preferring to keep their sleeping and eating areas spotless and away from where they relieve themselves.
Equally misleading is the image of pigs as fat and sluggish. Their average body fat ranges roughly from 16% to 25%, which is lower than that of many adult humans. Domesticated pigs often become overweight due to overfeeding and lack of exercise. In their natural habitats, however, pigs are active foragers, spending their days searching for food.

Perhaps most remarkable is their intelligence. Pigs can solve puzzles, learn tricks, and even master simple video games with joysticks. Studies suggest that their intelligence rivals that of a three-year-old child. Farmers have also noticed how quickly pigs learn routines and even respond to their names. Beyond brain power, pigs are social animals that can form strong bonds with each other and humans. They love to cuddle and will call out to their friends if they get separated. Pigs may love mud, but they are far from dirty either in manner or in mind.

Steam curls from a shallow iron pot as thin ribbons of beef turn from ruby to blush. Warishita — a mixture of soy sauce, sugar and mirin — goes in, and the room fills with a salty-sweet aroma. Tofu slips in beside mushrooms and greens, chopsticks hover and voices soften. More than a hot pot, “sukiyaki” is a table-side ritual that invites everyone to cook and enjoy at the same pace. The name is believed to be associated with the iron “suki,” a kind of spade once used by farmers for cooking and later replaced by shallow pots. As cultural taboos
