In many Western countries, the most common form of tally marks employs a five-bar gate structure: four vertical lines followed by a diagonal slash. To form this group, one begins by drawing four parallel vertical lines, each representing one. For the fifth, draw a diagonal line across the existing four. This diagonal stroke effectively creates a distinct group of five. To continue counting, just initiate a new cycle in the same manner. A set of five tallies combined with a single vertical line next to it represents the number six.

Across many Asian countries, the Chinese character “正“ (Zheng) is a widely recognized tally mark. This five-stroke character, meaning “correct” or “upright,” is believed to have been used to count customers at old Shanghai theaters. The stroke order follows standard Chinese writing convention. Begin with a horizontal stroke at the top, followed by a vertical stroke down the center, a second horizontal stroke connecting to the middle of the vertical line, and a shorter vertical stroke placed to the left of the longer central stroke, and complete it with a horizontal stroke at the bottom. Today, 正 remains a useful tool to count votes. Each vote is recorded with a mark, making it easy to track totals and significantly reducing the potential for fraud.

Talks aimed at striking a landmark global treaty on plastic pollution fell apart Friday last week as countries failed to find consensus on how the world should tackle the ever-growing scourge. The talks in Geneva — called after the collapse of the fifth and supposedly final round of talks in South Korea late last year — opened on Aug. 5. Negotiators from 185 nations worked beyond last Thursday’s deadline and through the night in an ultimately futile search for common ground. A large bloc wants bold action such as curbing plastic production, while a smaller clutch of oil-producing states want to
Last year, China’s push for the network certificate and internet ID system sparked widespread debate. The internet ID assigns users a unique code linked to their personal information without revealing their full identity, while the network certificate serves as a digital credential, enabling users to verify their identity across various platforms. This bold policy requires Chinese citizens to connect their online activities to their real identities. An internet “real-name system” demands that every user provide their actual identity information before accessing online services. The goal is to prevent online crime, cyberbullying, and harmful content. China has implemented a comprehensive real-name verification

The sun-kissed slopes of Provence, France, have long buzzed with the gentle hum of bees among fields of lavender. The cultivation of lavender in this region took root in Roman times. People back then valued the plant for its healing properties, its soothing qualities in baths, and its fragrant use in perfumes. It wasn’t until the 19th century that lavender farming took off. In nearby Grasse — the perfume capital of the world — the perfume industry began to flourish. __1__ This boom led to the expansion of lavender cultivation across Provence, particularly in the Valensole Plateau.
