Two men sentenced for double murder in Sijhih

The Taiwan High Court yesterday sentenced a man to death and another to life in prison for a double murder over a debt dispute in July last year.

Teng Kuo-liang (鄧國樑) received the death penalty, while the other defendant, Kao Cheng-hsiung (高正雄) was sentenced to life.

The two can appeal the ruling with the Supreme Court.

The victims, a woman surnamed Tseng and her 10-year-old son, were found floating in a river in Sijhih (汐止), Taipei County.

Teng and Kao, both alleged gang members, were arrested for involvement in the murder.

The ruling said that Teng, who is believed to have defrauded Tseng out of NT$3.4 million (US$105,000), was upset after Tseng sought to get her money back.

The court said that on June 4 last year, Teng and Kao invited the mother and her son to the riverside in Sijhih.

Teng allegedly gave Tseng drinks containing sedatives, while Kao drowned the boy by holding his head under the water.

Teng hit a dazed Tseng on the head with a wooden knife and pushed her into the river. He then jumped into the water and stabbed her until she was dead.

The ruling said the two men had used extraordinary cruelty in the killing of their victims over what was a relatively small dispute, adding that Teng had to be removed from society for the safety of others.
