Taiwan-grown orchids earned another international accolade on Tuesday when they won a silver medal at the 2010 Chelsea Flower Show in London.
Taiwanese Representative to the UK Katharine Chang (張小月) said she was very pleased to see the country win because the Chelsea Flower Show is a world-class horticultural event known for its stringent quality requirements.
“The honor proves the supremacy of our orchids,” Chang said, adding that she hoped the medal would spur sales of Taiwan-grown orchids across Britain.
Taiwan Orchid Growers Association secretary-general Lin Feng-pei (林豐沛), who is heading the delegation at the show, said the award came as a surprise because the panel of judges corrected some flaws at Taiwan’s booth during their visit on Monday.
“The silver medal is a great testament to the fine quality of our orchids,” Lin said.
Taiwan could have won gold had the delivery of butterfly orchids not been delayed by the volcanic eruption in Iceland, Lin said.

Taiwanese indie band Sunset Rollercoaster and South Korean outfit Hyukoh collectively received the most nominations at this year’s Golden Melody Awards, earning a total of seven nods from the jury on Wednesday. Hong Kong singer Eason Chan’s (陳奕迅) concerts in Kaohsiung this weekend have been postponed after he was diagnosed with Covid-19 this morning, the organizer said today. The Taipei District Court sentenced babysitters Liu Tsai-hsuan (劉彩萱) and Liu Jou-lin (劉若琳) to life and 18 years in prison respectively today for causing the death of a one-year-old boy in December 2023.
