Nantou County certified a traditional grocery store as an environmentally friendly ¡§green¡¨ store on Friday, the county¡¦s first to earn the label.
Chiao Hsin Supermarket in Puli Township (®H¨½) earned the distinction after passing the county government¡¦s screening process, allowing it to join some of the biggest names in retailing in the country to obtain the ¡§green store¡¨ label.
The county government said that 10 other stores in Nantou had already earned the honor, but were all part of big chains, such as Carrefour and the Tsann Kuen Group.
County officials praised the Chiao Hsin market for its efforts in environmental protection and expressed the hope that more local stores would follow the model and turn ¡§green.¡¨
Encouraging local business operators to go green is part of the central government¡¦s efforts to save energy and cut carbon dioxide emissions to combat the threat of global warming.
Under Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) regulations, stores labeled as ¡§green¡¨ must sell ¡§green products,¡¨ develop marketing strategies in the spirit of environmental protection and manage the shop in ways that protect the environment, such as using energy-saving devices and packing materials.
A certified ¡§green¡¨ store must also be devoted to promoting environmental protection concepts and take active measures to encourage consumers to purchase green products.
