DPP takes aim at Ma Ying-jeou's mayoral `triumphs'

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) politicians have once again turned their attention to Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou's (馬英九) record as Taipei mayor.

DPP Taipei City Councilor Hsu Chia-ching (徐佳青) is organizing an online poll on some of Ma's more contentious mayoral projects. Among these she lists the Taipei Arena, the Maokong cable car and the Jiancheng Circle night market.

The Taipei City Government spent NT$4.8 billion on the Taipei Arena, which is mired in disputes that resulted in the annulment of Eastern Multimedia Group's contract to run the facility.

The Maokong cable car cost NT$1.3 billion, but has come under fire after suffering 151 failures in 21 days of operation.

Hsu said the city government spent NT$200 million to renovate the Jiancheng night market, but the redesign did not meet operational requirements and the building was not being used.

Ma's campaign office spokesman Lo Chih-chiang (羅智強) said DPP presidential candidate Frank Hsieh's (謝長廷) "three great achievements" during his stint as Kaohsiung mayor be added to the survey. He listed these as the cave-ins during the construction of the Kaohsiung MRT, the innumerable mosquito-infested areas in that city and the Yuhuang Temple (玉皇宮) bribery case.
