Shih Kuo-ching (石國慶), who shot and killed a driver with a police pistol in an attempted hijacking in March, yesterday was indicted by Tainan prosecutors, who asked for the death sentence.
"The suspect, Shih, was callous and does not regret killing an innocent individual," Tainan prosecutors said in an indictment document yesterday.
"Shih claims he fired the pistol by incident. Prosecutors believe Shih should be sentenced to death," prosecutors said.
second suspect
Fang Hsu-liang (方旭良), another suspect, was not indicted because prosecutors determined he was not involved in the killing.
The tragic crime unfolded on March 15 when two Tainan County police officers, Lin You-chung (林裕崇) and Lia Wen-ching (賴文卿), chased a speeding vehicle with two passengers, Shih and Fang, who refused to pull over at a routine police checkpoint.
the chase
The chase came to an end in Liouchia (六甲) when the suspects' car rammed into an exit ramp median.
When the police approached the vehicle with weapons drawn, police said Shih wrested away an officer's sidearm and fired a shot, barely missing the policeman.
As his vehicle could no longer be driven, police said Shih tried to hijack the passing car of Hsiao Min-hsiang (蕭名享), who attempted to speed away from the scene.
Shih fired the pistol, striking Hsiao in the left shoulder through the window, police said.
Hsiao was found dead in his vehicle after authorities returned to the scene.
