Taiwan Quick Take: Who were the men in black?

The police confirmed that the seven "men in black" who guarded President Chen Shui-bian's son-in-law Chao Chien-ming (趙建銘) on Thursday when he attended his bail hearing at the Taipei District Court on July 10 were not officials, Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Wang Shi-cheng (王世堅) said. "The `men in black' were not from the police, the military, the investigation bureau, or the National Security Bureau," Wang said, after calling on Fan Yang-ning (方仰寧), deputy chief of the Zhongzheng First Police District. Pan-blue legislators suspected the seven "men in black" of being undercover police sent by the government, while some suspected that they were gangsters the Chao family had hired to protect him.
