Nicholas Fung said that he was riding a wave of confidence from a runner-up finish last week as he shot a six-under-par 66 to lead the Manila Masters by a stroke yesterday, while Taiwan’s Hung Chien-yao shared second place.
The 25-year-old Malaysian drained seven birdies at par-72 Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club to hit the front after round one.
Fung finished behind Thailand’s Danthai Boonma at last week’s World Classic Championship in Singapore and he said he was still in the groove in Manila.

“My game is feeling good and I have been playing well. I left a couple of shots out there, but it’s okay. I am feeling very confident,” he said, in comments released by the Asian Tour.
“I like playing here. It is always good to come back as I always feel comfortable. My runner-up finish last week definitely gave me a boost in confidence. It’s good to come into the week with good form,” Fund added.
Hung and Thailand’s Poom Saksansin shared second spot, a shot ahead of a group of seven bunched on 68 four-under 68, including Taiwan’s Lee Chieh-po, along with Sam Brazel, Orlan Sumcad, Rattanon Wannasrichan, Kim Gi-whan, Carlos Pigem and Jyoti Randhawa.
Taiwan’s Lu Wen-teh carded a one-under 71, while his compatriots Lu Wei-chi and Chan Shih-change scored an even-par 72.
