Manchester City avenged their recent loss to Chelsea in the English Premier League with a 2-0 home win on Saturday that sent them into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
City’s perfect home record in the league was spoiled last week when Chelsea pulled off a 1-0 win at the Etihad Stadium, but goals in each half from Stevan Jovetic and Samir Nasri gave Manuel Pellegrini’s side revenge.
“We wanted revenge today,” City captain Vincent Kompany told ITV. “Twelve days ago we had a really bad game. We gave them a lot of chances, but we created a lot as well. Today we just adapted. They played the same and it was comfortable for us.”

Both managers named strong teams for the heavyweight fifth-round clash, but hosts City dominated from the off.
Jovetic seemed determined to impress and after clipping a shot just over the crossbar when Petr Cech spilled an effort from Yaya Toure, the Montenegro international forward broke the deadlock in the 16th minute.
Edin Dzeko was the architect with a measured pass into the penalty area for Jovetic, who placed a delicate shot into the net via the base of the left-hand post.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho introduced last month’s signing Mohamed Salah and striker Fernando Torres in the second half, but it was City substitute Nasri who made the difference.
Back in action after a five-week layoff with a knee injury, the Frenchman doubled City’s lead in the 67th minute when he played a neat one-two with David Silva, before prodding the ball into an unguarded net.
City centerback Joleon Lescott saw a goal ruled out for offside shortly afterwards, but it was the only source of regret for the hosts, who welcome Barcelona to the Etihad in the UEFA Champions League tomorrow.
“The second goal was an offside, but we would still have lost 1-0 as we were never close to scaring City in the game,” Mourinho said. “Today proved how difficult it is to win here, which shows how well my team did in the last game.”
Wigan Athletic’s defense of the FA Cup remained on course after the second-tier side won 2-1 at Premier League club Cardiff City to reach the last eight.
Shock 1-0 winners over Manchester City in last season’s final, Wigan were subsequently relegated to the Championship, but they put paid to Cardiff thanks to a fine goal from FA Cup final match-winner Ben Watson.
Wigan took the lead in the 18th minute at the Cardiff City Stadium when Chris McMann converted a cross from Jordi Gomez, but the hosts leveled nine minutes later through Fraizer Campbell.
Watson notched what proved to be the winner five minutes before halftime, lashing home a thunderbolt from Marc-Antoine Fortune’s tapped free-kick to send Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Cardiff out of the competition.
“We take it game by game,” said Wigan manager Uwe Rosler, whose side beat Crystal Palace in the fourth round. “I wanted to compete against the best teams in the country and Cardiff today gave us the possibility, and we stood our own ground very well.”
Earlier, Craig Gardner scored a magnificent winning goal as Sunderland beat top-flight rivals Southampton 1-0 to become the first side to progress from the fifth round.
After a low-key first half, Gardner illuminated proceedings in the 49th minute with a goal of shimmering quality, side-stepping Victor Wanyama and dispatching a long-range shot that crashed in off the crossbar.
Sunderland have also qualified for the League Cup final, where they face Manchester City, but manager Gus Poyet said that avoiding relegation from the Premier League remains his top priority.
Bob Stokoe, manager of the Sunderland team that won the FA Cup in 1973, is commemorated by a statue outside the Stadium of Light, but Poyet said: “Me, I would prefer to stay in the Premier League.”
“I am not looking for a statue, that’s for sure,” he said.
The scheduled encounter between second-tier sides Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton Athletic was postponed earlier on Saturday due to a waterlogged pitch at Hillsborough.
All of Saturday’s games were preceded by a moment of reflection in memory of former England and Preston North End great Tom Finney, who died on Friday at the age of 91.
BOUNCING BACK: Antetokounmpo had just returned from an eight-game injury absence last month, leading the Milwaukee Bucks to their third win in four games Giannis Antetokounmpo threw down the game-winning dunk with 4.7 seconds remaining to lift the Milwaukee Bucks to a 122-121 victory over the Charlotte Hornets and grab a slice of NBA history on Friday. The Bucks trailed by as many as 16 on their home floor, but Antetokounmpo scored 12 of his 30 points in the final quarter to help seal the win in a frantic finish that saw five lead changes in the final 45.7 seconds. The two-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) added 10 rebounds and five assists. It was his 158th regular-season game with at least 30 points, 10 rebounds and
For the first time in almost 36 years, a Parisian derby will be played in French soccer’s top flight when reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain FC take on the nouveau riche Paris Football Club (PFC) today. Not one of the players involved in today’s match — PFC’s 38-year-old third-choice goalkeeper Remy Riou is almost certainly not going to be involved — was born the last time there was a Parisian derby in Ligue 1. That was on Feb. 25, 1990, when Moroccan midfielder Aziz Bouderbala scored a brace as Racing Paris 1 beat PSG 2-1 at the Parc des Princes home that
Stan Wawrinka’s 40-year-old legs did not let him down over three-plus hours in his first singles match of a farewell tour yesterday. Three-time Grand Slam singles champion Wawrinka beat Arthur Rinderknech of France, who is ranked 29th to Wawrinka’s 157th, 5-7, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5). The match went 3 hours, 16 minutes. Wawrinka last month announced that this year would be his last on the ATP tour. “Today was a tough battle ... it’s amazing to come here for the first time, to have so much support,” Wawrinka said yesterday. “Twenty years on tour, you kind of always play in the same place
Manchester City have confirmed defender Josko Gvardiol suffered a broken leg in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium. Gvardiol was one of two City centerbacks who went off injured in the second half, along with Ruben Dias, before Enzo Fernandez scored a stoppage-time equalizer for the visitors. The draw left second-placed City six points behind English Premier League leaders Arsenal. City, announcing Gvardiol sustained a tibial fracture to his right leg, added in a statement issued on Monday: “The defender will have surgery later this week and assessment remains ongoing to ascertain the full extent of the
