Kuo Sho-yen’s two-run double capped a three-run sixth that turned a 0-2 deficit into a 3-2 advantage as the Lamigo Monkeys went on to defeat the EDA Rhinos 6-4 at the Kaohsiung Cheng Ching Lake Baseball Stadium last night to take the weekend series by a 2-1 margin.
An RBI double by Chang Chien-ming and a solo homer by Lin Yi-chuan put the Rhinos ahead 2-0 after four innings of play.
However, the visitors were able to overcome the deficit by scoring the next five runs, before holding off a late-game rally by the hosts with an insurance run in the top of the ninth to make good on the win.
Starter Mike Loree was credited with his 10th win of the season, allowing two runs — one earned — on six hits over seven innings to beat his counterpart, Lin Chen-hua.
LIONS 2, ELEPHANTS 1
Lin Chih-hsiang’s one-out single, with runners on first and second, scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth for the Uni-President Lions as they held on to edge the Brother Elephants at the Tainan Municipal Baseball Stadium last night.
The win not only spared the Cats suffering a clean series sweep at home, but also propelled them past the Elephants to take sole possession of the No. 2 spot in the standings.
Starter Nelson Figueroa was not at his best on the night, but managed to pitch himself out of trouble at crucial junctures in the game to allow just a lone run on the seven hits he surrendered over 6-1/3 innings to claim his eighth win of the season.
The Lions’ bullpen deserved a round of applause for the big win as the trio of Fu Yu-kang, Boof Bonser and closer Luis Vizcaino combined for 2-2/3 frames of hitless relief to keep the Elephants’ offense at bay.

New Zealand stayed firm at their Eden Park fortress to claim an attritional 24-17 win over South Africa in a heavyweight clash between the world’s top two rugby sides yesterday.
