Orlando Roman tossed eight-and-a-third innings of near-flawless ball and Peng “Chia Chia” Cheng-min batted three-for-five with a pair of RBIs as the Brother Elephants defeated the La New Bears 3-1 at the Taoyuan International Baseball Stadium last night.
It was the second win in as many days for the Elephants, evening their record to a modest 2-2 mark in the early going of the second half of the season.
Roman kept the Bears off-balance throughout the contest with good command and velocity on his fastball and a variety of off-speed pitches. Other than an offering to Chen Chin-fong that the Bears slugger smashed out of the park for his fourth homer of the season, the American righty was virtually unhittable in a four-hit gem, while fanning four and walking none.

“It was a big win for me and the team because we did not quite start off the second half on the right foot,” Roman said after the game, referring to the Elephants’ 0-2 start with a pair of close losses to the Bulls.
Also starring for the victorious Elephants was Chia Chia, who went deep as well with a solo blast off Bears reliever Geng Bo-hsuen in the top of the ninth that added to the Elephants’ slim 2-1 lead and helped secure the win. It was Chia Chia’s second three-hit game of the week, upping his team-best batting average to an outstanding .338.
The Elephants wasted little time getting to starter Luis Villarreal with a quick run off the Texas native on an RBI single by Peng in the top of the first.
The 1-0 lead would stand until the top of the seventh when the Elephants managed their second run of the match on a double down the right-field line by Chang Cheng-wei that made it 2-0.
Chen’s solo shot off Roman in the bottom of the seventh finally got the Bears on the board, but that turned out to be the lone run they would plate as Roman mowed down all but one of the next seven batters he faced, before closer Ryan Cullen grabbed his 15th save of the season.
BULLS 9, LIONS 3
The red-hot Sinon Bulls continued their recent surge with a convincing 9-3 rout of the Uni-President Lions in Tainan last night to remain unbeaten in the second half with a perfect 4-0 record.
The heart of the order — led by Lin Yi-chuan’s three-for-four hitting, with a home run and three RBIs — went a combined seven-for-11 on the night, accounting for seven of the nine runs scored by the first-half champions.
That was more than ample to back up starter Yang Jien-fu, who easily picked up his sixth win of the year. Yang pitched seven innings of one-run ball.
The Bulls face the Lions again today at 5:05pm in Douliu, while the Elephants take on the Bears at the same time in Jhouji.
US track and field athletes have about four dozen pieces to choose from when assembling their uniforms at the Olympics. The one grabbing the most attention is a high-cut leotard that barely covers the bikini line and has triggered debate between those who think it is sexist and others who say they do not need the Internet to make sure they have good uniforms. Among those critical or laughing at the uniforms included Paralympian Femita Ayanbeku, sprinter Britton Wilson and even athletes from other countries such as Britain’s Abigail Irozuru, who wrote on social media: “Was ANY female athlete consulted in
Four-time NBA all-star DeMarcus Cousins arrived in Taiwan with his family early yesterday to finish his renewed contract with the Taiwan Beer Leopards in the T1 League. Cousins initially played a four-game contract with the Leopards in January. On March 18, the Taoyuan-based team announced that Cousins had renewed his contract. “Hi what’s up Leopard fans, I’m back. I’m excited to be back and can’t wait to join the team,” Cousins said in a video posted on the Leopard’s Facebook page. “Most of all, can’t wait to see you guys, the fans, next weekend. So make sure you come out and support the Beer
Former US Masters champion Zach Johnson was left embarrassed after a foul-mouthed response to ironic cheers from spectators after a triple bogey at Augusta National on Friday. Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, missed the cut after his three-over-par round of 75 left him on seven-over 151 for 36 holes, his six on the par-three 12th playing a big role in his downfall. Television footage showed Johnson reacting to sarcastic cheers and applause when he tapped in for the triple bogey by yelling: “Oh fuck off.” Such a response would be considered bad form in any golf tournament, but is particularly out of keeping
The sacred flame for the Paris Olympics was lit yesterday in Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the ancient Games, in a ceremony inspired by antiquity and marked by messages of hope amid multiple global crises. “In ancient times, the Olympic Games brought together the Greek city states, even — and in particular — during times of war and conflict,” International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said. “Today, the Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. Then as now, the Olympic athletes are sending this powerful message — yes, it is possible to compete fiercely
