First chairman of DPP dies of pancreatic cancer

By Joyce Huang  /  STAFF REPORTER

The DPP's first chairman, Chiang Peng-chien (江鵬堅), died yesterday of pancreatic cancer at the age of 60.

Chiang, a veteran human rights activist, had been the defense counsel of one of the Kaohsiung Eight, Lin I-hsiung (林義雄), during the trial of the 1979 Formosa Incident. Having also served as the DPP's secretary-general, a legislator and a member of the Control Yuan, Chiang dedicated his whole life to politics.

He was hospitalized after suffering a relapse in June. Chiang had been in a critical condition since early December, doctors said yesterday.
