Wang Hsun-ping, a mildly cognitively challenged 19-year-old, loves painting. The simplicity of his work, and the bold colors he uses, has earned him countless awards; he has not only had art dealers running to his door, he has also put on many art exhibitions. His mother, recalling the difficulties they have had to arrive at this point, says, “I hope that other parents in this situation do not give up on their children, and do not become discouraged because of their child’s condition. All it takes is a bit of hard work, and miracles really can happen.”
Wang’s mother, Lin Hsiu-sui, reveals, “Before, I didn’t dare take my child out of the house.” Wang was still not talking at one, so his mother took him to the hospital. Until six, he was classified as having delayed development. When he was young, he was a difficult child, and would cause problems for no reason, so that his mother really did not know what to do.
All she could do was to tell herself, “I had him; I just have to deal with it.” When he was three or four years old, his mother took him to an art studio to draw, and discovered that he was engrossed. He particularly liked colors, and his use of color was praised by the artist Zeng Ri-sheng. From there he pursued the study of painting, for a dozen or so years without break.

Wang himself says, “When I’m painting, I am happy, and inspired.” His mother says, “Since my son started studying painting, he has taken part in many competitions, and each time he comes away with a prize.”
Lin says, special education in Taiwan doesn’t really put much emphasis on art, but psychologists believe that contact with different skills and art can stimulate development in cognitively challenged children. She also says that she herself had never put any pressure on her child, and that she let him paint or work, but that she had never thought he would really be able to sell a painting and start to earn money from it.
Last year, Wang had a joint exhibition with his teacher, Zeng. His work attracted a lot of attention, and he sold 30 paintings. He would later go on to sign a contract with an art dealer, to be one of their artists. His works are selling online for up to NT$50,000 a piece.(Liberty Times, translated by Paul Cooper)
Rice is an essential ingredient in Taiwanese cuisine. Many foods are made of rice, adding more variety to our cooking, such as rice cake, or “gui.” Wagui is made by steaming rice flour batter in a bowl. The term “gui” refers to a type of food made from rice, while “wa” refers to a bowl. The pronunciation of “gui” in Taiwanese Hokkien is similar to the word for “nobility” in Chinese, so it is common for people to prepare various types of gui, including wagui, as offerings to the gods or ancestors,. nobility (n.) While Taiwan may not be
Drive-through (or drive-thru) restaurants provide people with the immense convenience of being able to purchase and pick up meals without needing to leave their vehicles. These restaurants have been around for decades, and their success has spawned a number of equally handy services. The drive-through concept originated with the drive-in restaurant, the first of which was established in the US in 1921. Patrons would order and eat the food that was delivered to their cars by workers called “carhops.” Ten years later, a drive-through service was introduced, but it was not until 1947 that the first exclusively drive-through restaurant opened its
On Tuesday last week, the flame for this summer’s Paris Olympics was lit at the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games in southern Greece in a meticulously choreographed ceremony. It will then be carried through Greece for more than 5,000km before being handed over to French organizers at the Athens venue used for the first modern Olympics in 1896. The pageantry at Olympia has been an essential part of every Olympics for nearly 90 years since the Games in Berlin. It’s meant to provide an ineluctable link between the modern event and the ancient Greek original on which it was initially modelled. Once
