The Kinmen Coast Patrol Corps announced on April 9 that an unmanned fishing boat suspected to have come from Hecuo Village in China’s Xiamen City had turned up in the Nanmen Seashore Park not far from the built-up area of Jincheng. The coast guards are asking China to help find the boat’s owner, but if nobody claims it within six months after the announcement, it will be treated as a waste object and destroyed.
The Coast Patrol Corps said it had received a report on the afternoon of April 8 that there was an unpowered sampan adrift along the shore of the Nanmen Seashore Park in Jincheng Township. The caller said that the boat’s hull was damaged and asked the coast guard to help deal with it.
When the coast guards arrived and surveyed the scene, they measured the boat and found it to be about eight meters long and 2.5 meters wide. The boat had a panel on it reading “(Provisional) Hecuo No. 47.” There was some shabby fishing gear in the boat and it had no outboard motor. The sides of the boat were damaged in many places and it had no mooring rope. The coast guard surmised that, due to the recent bad sea conditions, with strong winds and big waves, the boat had broken adrift and drifted over from Hecuo in Xiamen City to Kinmen.

Quite a lot of people who were out for a walk in the seashore park were curious enough to go over and put in their two cents, saying that the most likely thing was that the boat had drifted over from the opposite coast. Others said that if it had happened back in the time of the defense zone administration, it would definitely have been suspected that “communist bandits” had sneaked onshore, and, especially considering how close it was to the town, a search operation would certainly have been launched.
Rice is an essential ingredient in Taiwanese cuisine. Many foods are made of rice, adding more variety to our cooking, such as rice cake, or “gui.” Wagui is made by steaming rice flour batter in a bowl. The term “gui” refers to a type of food made from rice, while “wa” refers to a bowl. The pronunciation of “gui” in Taiwanese Hokkien is similar to the word for “nobility” in Chinese, so it is common for people to prepare various types of gui, including wagui, as offerings to the gods or ancestors,. nobility (n.) While Taiwan may not be
Drive-through (or drive-thru) restaurants provide people with the immense convenience of being able to purchase and pick up meals without needing to leave their vehicles. These restaurants have been around for decades, and their success has spawned a number of equally handy services. The drive-through concept originated with the drive-in restaurant, the first of which was established in the US in 1921. Patrons would order and eat the food that was delivered to their cars by workers called “carhops.” Ten years later, a drive-through service was introduced, but it was not until 1947 that the first exclusively drive-through restaurant opened its
On Tuesday last week, the flame for this summer’s Paris Olympics was lit at the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games in southern Greece in a meticulously choreographed ceremony. It will then be carried through Greece for more than 5,000km before being handed over to French organizers at the Athens venue used for the first modern Olympics in 1896. The pageantry at Olympia has been an essential part of every Olympics for nearly 90 years since the Games in Berlin. It’s meant to provide an ineluctable link between the modern event and the ancient Greek original on which it was initially modelled. Once
