After three years of research, a seaweed research team at National Pingtung University of Science and Technology’s Department of Aquaculture have successfully developed seaweed farming technology. As well as cooperating with fish farmers and using recycling farming techniques to grow healthy non-toxic seaweed, it has also helped to develop seaweed products, so that production and sales are joined up.
Professor Weng Shao-lian of the research team said that to grow seaweed, a suitable seawater temperature and an appropriate environment for easy photosynthesis are both necessary. After numerous experiments she found that the low temperature seawater from producing liquid natural gas could be used to farm seaweed. After fish farmers added the seaweed growing equipment, they could use the waste water from fish farming to grow seaweed. After the water was purified by growing seaweed, it was more conducive to raising fish, so they benefited doubly.
Department of Aquaculture Assistant Professor Lee Meng-chou pointed out that seaweed is rich in dietary fiber and is beneficial to health. However because seaweed is grown in the sea the public often worries that it may have a heavy metal content. Farmed seaweed, however, must undergo testing with sophisticated equipment, so people can eat it without worry.

The university noted that it had successfully grown edible green algae, including seagrass and sea grape, as well as edible red algae, including sea wood ear fungus, red feather algae, eucheuma and hypnea charoides. It has also developed sea wood ear fungus drinks and seaweed snacks for pets. In the future it will continue to develop new products and to cooperate with more fish farmers, to lead development of the seaweed farming industry.

屏東科技大學養殖系海藻研究團隊經過三年研究,成功開發海藻養殖技術;除與養殖漁民合作,利用循環養殖方式種出健康無毒的海藻,並協助開發海藻後端產品,讓產銷連線。
研究團隊教授翁韶蓮說,海藻生長必須配合適當海水溫度及容易行光合作用的環境。經多次實驗,發現以液化天然氣製程中排放的低溫海水可以養殖海藻。養殖漁民增設養藻設備後,就能拿養魚廢水養藻;藻類淨化後的水質更利於養魚,可獲雙重利益。

屏科大指出,該校成功種出的綠藻類包括海葡萄及滸苔,紅藻類包括海木耳、紅翎藻、麒麟菜、長枝沙菜等,均可食用;他們並開發出海木耳飲品及海藻寵物零食。未來將持續開發新產品並與更多漁民合作,帶動海藻養殖產業發展。
