The Taitung County Fire Bureau dispatched two members of its special rescue team, Ko Hung-ju and Lin Chen-hsien, together with three search-and-rescue dogs, to the National Fire Agency’s training center in Nantou County’s Jhushan Township to take part in a rescue dog skill transfer training program. The three search-and-rescue dogs have a highly accute sense of smell. Last week they took the International Rescue Dog Organization (IRO) certification test, scoring an unprecedented success by winning the top three places in Rescue Dog Rubble Search Test A, while Ko and Lin also both gained their dog handlers’ licenses without a hitch. So it was good news for both the men and their dogs, and their colleagues applauded them for the effort, perseverance and aspiration that gained them outstanding scores in the test.
The three Labrador search-and-rescue dogs, Jian-kan, Shiang-he and Xander, were transferred at the beginning of last year from the Central Narcotics Center directly to the Jhushan training center to undergo a skill transfer professional training program that lasted a year and a half. In March of this year, they took part for the first time in the Wanan No. 23 disaster prevention and search-and-rescue drills. Lin says that the IRO certification is extremely strict, and last year 17 groups from all over the world took the evaluation, with only five passing the test. As well as search-and-rescue dogs, dog handlers also need to be certified.
The IRO held its two-day search-and-rescue certification test in Kaohsiung on June 11 and 12. Jian-kan, Shiang-he and Xander did not disappoint, weaving back and forth between the rubble piles to search for their targets, to be awarded with the top three positions in the Rubble Search Test A with high scores, thus directly qualifying to progress from level A to level B. Having heard the good news, their firefighting colleagues cheered for them.

Ko said they were able to win medals primarily due to the full support and financial aid provided by the county government and fire bureau, which allowed them to spare no effort to train the dogs without concern. He was also very grateful to the central Taiwan branch of the National Rescue Command Center for graciously transferring skills, allowing them to follow the correct and effective techniques needed to pass the dog handlers’ license test. Promoting search-and-rescue dogs really is a challenge.

Rice is an essential ingredient in Taiwanese cuisine. Many foods are made of rice, adding more variety to our cooking, such as rice cake, or “gui.” Wagui is made by steaming rice flour batter in a bowl. The term “gui” refers to a type of food made from rice, while “wa” refers to a bowl. The pronunciation of “gui” in Taiwanese Hokkien is similar to the word for “nobility” in Chinese, so it is common for people to prepare various types of gui, including wagui, as offerings to the gods or ancestors,. nobility (n.) While Taiwan may not be
It’s no secret that Japanese people have a deep affection for noodles. Like in the rest of East Asia, noodles are an important staple food, second only to rice. Japanese people have enjoyed noodles for over 1,000 years. The first noodles came from China and were introduced around 800 CE. As time passed, noodles in Japan not only became widespread but also developed some unique Japanese characteristics. The three most popular types of noodles in Japan are ramen, soba, and udon. Ramen, typically made from wheat flour, is usually thin and firm. The dough is kneaded and left to
Drive-through (or drive-thru) restaurants provide people with the immense convenience of being able to purchase and pick up meals without needing to leave their vehicles. These restaurants have been around for decades, and their success has spawned a number of equally handy services. The drive-through concept originated with the drive-in restaurant, the first of which was established in the US in 1921. Patrons would order and eat the food that was delivered to their cars by workers called “carhops.” Ten years later, a drive-through service was introduced, but it was not until 1947 that the first exclusively drive-through restaurant opened its
On Tuesday last week, the flame for this summer’s Paris Olympics was lit at the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games in southern Greece in a meticulously choreographed ceremony. It will then be carried through Greece for more than 5,000km before being handed over to French organizers at the Athens venue used for the first modern Olympics in 1896. The pageantry at Olympia has been an essential part of every Olympics for nearly 90 years since the Games in Berlin. It’s meant to provide an ineluctable link between the modern event and the ancient Greek original on which it was initially modelled. Once
