An ecological film festival hosted by the Forestry Bureau has officially commenced. With 30 films in all, Taiwan’s first film about bees — Bee Taiwan — kicked off the festival on Sept. 24. Films will be shown in 19 cities and counties throughout Taiwan at 57 venues, with more than 1,200 showings in all. For more details, visit bureau’s Web site (

On Sept. 24, while sharing his experience of filming Bee Taiwan, movie director Lee Wei-chieh said that, “The mother of the two kids in the documentary actually had a serious altercation with her neighbor because she wanted to preserve the hornets’ nest near her house so that her kids could continue observing and making a record of it. Actually, if you really understand hornets, then you wouldn’t necessarily want to kill them as soon as you see one.”
