Taiwanese choreographer Huang Yi, invited by the Ars Electronica Festival, showcased his work “Huang Yi & KUKA” at the festival’s opening performance in Linz, Austria on Sept. 5 and the work received an enthusiastic response. Martin Honzik, the festival director, said that he decided to include the work in the festival’s feature programs when he first saw the video highlights of “Huang Yi & KUKA.” After seeing the performance for himself, Honzik found that the work lived up to its name as “a work with foresight and influence.” This was the first time that a performing-arts piece from Taiwan has been invited to perform at both the opening and mixed-program events of the Ars Electronica Festival.
Founded in 1979, the Ars Electronica Festival is the landmark festival in the world’s techono-art circles. Now in its 43rd year, the festival attracts over 100 million participants each year. “Huang Yi & KUKA” is a duet between himself and an industrial robot. In 2012, Huang won Taipei’s Digital Art Performance Award for the work. Besides the opening event, Huang also gave three additional performances at the “Tobacco Factory,” one of the festival’s main venues.
