The brutal summer heat can easily make you feel a bit sluggish, but jazz might be just the thing to liberate your soul. Approaching its tenth year, the National Theater and Concert Hall’s (NTCH) annual Summer Jazz concert series will include four brilliant performances at the National Concert Hall and two free outdoor concerts in Liberty Square on August 24 and 25 this year. The outdoor concerts will include the Japanese jazz fusion band T-Square on the first evening, and renowned local acts Soy La Ley Afro-Cuban Jazz Band, Orbit Folks, and Sizhukong on the second day.
Joe Lovano’s Us Five quintet will be performing on August 26, the first show in a series of ticketed performances to be held inside the National Concert Hall. The New York Times has praised the leader of the band, Joe Lovano, as being one of the greatest musicians in all of jazz history. A master of the tenor saxophone, Lovano came to Taiwan once before in 2004 as part of Summer Jazz, but this year he is returning to celebrate its tenth year.
Jazz hard bop drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath, who first recorded with legendary saxophonist John Coltrane in 1957, will be joined by hard bop trumpeter Michael Philip Mossman and Grammy Award-nominated saxophonist Antonio Hart. Rich Huang, the so-called “Drum King of Taiwan,” will also play with Heath in a drum duo setting. The Mingus Big Band, a band created by Sue Mingus, the widow of 20th century jazz giant Charles Mingus, more than 20 years ago, will be performing on Sept. 5. Dubbed “the best jazz orchestra in the world” by the Washington Post, the Mingus Big Band fuses rich harmonies with jovial blues music, making them the most suitable group for someone listening to jazz for the very first time.
