Mark to the rescue
It was a sunny day and Mark and Kathleen were spending the afternoon playing chess. Suddenly there was a loud knock at the door. “I wonder who that could be?” Mark said to himself. He opened the door and found himself standing face to face with Mayor Rumkips.
“Somebody has stolen the keys to all the fire hydrants in the city, so there’s no way of putting out fires. Kathleen, I want you to search for the keys. Mark, I want you to use your trunk to put out the fires,” said the mayor. “Certainly, sir. We’re happy to help!” said Kathleen cheerfully. “Great, there’s a fire truck waiting outside. Here’s the key,” said the mayor.
Mark put on his uniform, grabbed an ax and fire extinguisher, then got in the fire truck. He had been driving around for about an hour when the radio crackled to life. “Emergency, emergency! There are reports of a fire at Pizza Palace on the high street. Can anybody attend?” said the operator’s voice. “I’m on my way,” said Mark, as he switched on his siren and sped toward the scene.
The first thing he saw when he arrived on the scene was smoke billowing out of the building. Luigi, the head chef, was trapped on the third floor and was waving from the window. A vendor was selling lemonade to the crowd that had gathered to watch the excitement. Mark immediately knew what to do. He ran to the lemonade stand and sucked up all the lemonade. There was so much it took him almost five minutes to get it all. Then he pointed his trunk at Pizza Palace and began to spray it with lemonade. Before long the fire was out, and Luigi came out, dripping with lemonade. Just then, Kathleen arrived. “Mark! I know who stole the keys to the hydrants. You won’t believe it…”(JOHN PHILLIPS, STAFF WRITER)
Rice is an essential ingredient in Taiwanese cuisine. Many foods are made of rice, adding more variety to our cooking, such as rice cake, or “gui.” Wagui is made by steaming rice flour batter in a bowl. The term “gui” refers to a type of food made from rice, while “wa” refers to a bowl. The pronunciation of “gui” in Taiwanese Hokkien is similar to the word for “nobility” in Chinese, so it is common for people to prepare various types of gui, including wagui, as offerings to the gods or ancestors,. nobility (n.) While Taiwan may not be
Drive-through (or drive-thru) restaurants provide people with the immense convenience of being able to purchase and pick up meals without needing to leave their vehicles. These restaurants have been around for decades, and their success has spawned a number of equally handy services. The drive-through concept originated with the drive-in restaurant, the first of which was established in the US in 1921. Patrons would order and eat the food that was delivered to their cars by workers called “carhops.” Ten years later, a drive-through service was introduced, but it was not until 1947 that the first exclusively drive-through restaurant opened its
On Tuesday last week, the flame for this summer’s Paris Olympics was lit at the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games in southern Greece in a meticulously choreographed ceremony. It will then be carried through Greece for more than 5,000km before being handed over to French organizers at the Athens venue used for the first modern Olympics in 1896. The pageantry at Olympia has been an essential part of every Olympics for nearly 90 years since the Games in Berlin. It’s meant to provide an ineluctable link between the modern event and the ancient Greek original on which it was initially modelled. Once
