High on Mount Sinai, Moses was on psychedelic drugs when he heard God deliver the Ten Commandments, an Israeli researcher claimed in a study published last week.
Such mind-altering substances formed an important part of the religious rites of Israelites in biblical times, Benny Shanon, a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem wrote in the Time and Mind journal of philosophy.
"As far as Moses on Mount Sinai is concerned, it was either a supernatural cosmic event, which I don't believe, or a legend, which I don't believe either, or finally, and this is very probable, an event that joined Moses and the people of Israel under the effect of narcotics," Shanon told Israeli public radio last week.
Moses was probably also on drugs when he saw the "burning bush," suggested Shanon, who said he himself has used such substances.
"The Bible says people see sounds, and that is a classic phenomenon," he said, citing the example of religious ceremonies in the Amazon in which drugs are used that induce people to "see music."
He mentioned his own experience when he used ayahuasca, a powerful psychotropic plant, during a religious ceremony in Brazil's Amazon forest in 1991. "I experienced visions that had spiritual-religious connotations," Shanon said.
He said the psychedelic effects of ayahuasca were similar to those produced by drugs based on the bark of the acacia tree, which is frequently mentioned in the Bible.(AFP)

| Ten Commandments 十誡
The Ten Commandments are a list of moral rules that are important to both Christianity and Judaism. According to religious tradition, they were written by God and given to Moses while he was on Mount Sinai.
The Ten Commandments include rules such as: "You shall not make wrongful use of the name of your God," "Honor your mother and father," "You shall not covet your neighbor's wife," "You shall not steal" and "You shall not kill."

Rosalie: You have to try this cheesecake. It's delicious!
Jayden: Wow! That's pretty good cheesecake. Shall we go to the film now?
Rosalie: No, I want more cheesecake. I've never eaten anything so delicious.
Timmy: Hey guys, are you ready? What's up with Rosalie?
Jayden: She had one bite of cheesecake and became as high as a kite. Just let her have another piece, then we can go.
be as high as a kite
People who are as high as a kite are very excited. The phrase is also used to describe people who are acting odd because they're under the influence of drugs.
