George Oxwell predicts the end

One day Mark and Kathleen were walking through the mall when they noticed a long line.

"What are they waiting for?" Mark asked.

"Didn't you hear? The author George Oxwell is signing copies of his book," Kathleen replied.

"George Oxwell? I've never heard of him."

"He's not well known, but he has a group of followers. In a book he wrote last year, he predicted that the earth would end at the end of the year."

    "Well he was wrong."

"That's what people said in January. But then Oxwell said he was referring to the lunar calendar."

Mark began to worry. Lunar New Year was only a few days away. But Kathleen said that nutcases like Oxwell weren't worth listening to.

The next few days went by without incident, and Mark stopped thinking about Oxwell.

Mark and Kathleen held a party at their house on Lunar New Year's Eve. Everyone was eating when suddenly there was a loud noise.

    "What was that?" Mark cried.

"Those were just firecrackers," Kathleen said. "Finish your noodles."

A few minutes later, it began smelling like smoke.

    "I think there's a fire," Mark said.

"Someone is just burning paper money. Go close the window," Kathleen said.

Mark walked over to the window and looked outside. He saw a big dragon flying through the street … (MICHAEL KEARNEY, STAFF WRITER)
