    The footwear disaster

Mark was watching a football game on TV when Kathleen came in.

"Peggy Peacock just invited us to dinner at the Stately Hotel," she said.

"But I'm not dressed nicely enough to go there," Mark said.

"So put on your suit," Kathleen said.

Mark dressed up in his best dinner coat. Kathleen was wearing a dress and high heels. They were walking into the restaurant at the Stately Hotel when a waiter said, "Wait!"

    "What's wrong?" Kathleen asked.

"No shoes, no service," the waiter said, pointing at Mark's feet.

"But it's really hard to find shoes that fit my feet," Mark replied.

"Sorry," the stubborn waiter replied. "Try the department store around the corner."

Kathleen and Mark went to the department store, and Mark walked up to a saleswoman.

"I'd like to try on your biggest shoes," he said.

They were tight but Mark got them. He and Kathleen returned to the restaurant.

After dinner, music started to play. "Let's dance," Kathleen said.

As they were dancing, Mark's feet began to hurt. Just when he couldn't take it anymore, the pain disappeared. Mark looked at his feet. The shoes had burst open!

Mark looked up and saw the waiter walking toward him. But there was nowhere to hide his feet … (Michael Kearney, staff writer)
