The oldest newspaper in the world, Sweden's Post och Inrikes Tidningar, has ended its run as a print publication and will be published exclusively on the Internet.

The Post och Inrikes Tidningar (PoIT) — or Post and Domestic Newspaper — was founded in 1645 by Queen Christina, and became a staple for readers throughout Sweden from the late 17th century to the 18th century.

But as other newspapers came on the market, PoIT's readership dwindled, and by the 1900s PoIT's was primarily dedicated to announcements from companies listed on the stock exchange and financial and legal institutions.

Despite the fact that the paper has not covered news stories for over 100 years, the World Association of Newspapers recognizes PoIT as the world's oldest still in publication.

The electronic format, launched on Jan. 1, remains the official news organ of the government — a role enshrined in Swedish law — as it has been since the 17th century.

"The change in format is of course a major departure, for some possibly a little sad, but it is also a natural step," said PoIT's new editor-in-chief Roland Haegglund.

Haegglund believes that the move to the Internet will breathe new life into the paper.

"It will definitely widen our readership. Now anyone with Internet access can read PoIT free of charge," said Haegglund, the sole full-time employee of the paper since its incorporation into Bolagsverket, the Swedish Companies Registration Office, at the beginning of the year.

"You couldn't just chance upon the print version. Now everyone has the chance to be informed."

不過隨著其他報紙問市後,其讀者就銳減,一九○○年代的《國內郵報》主要為刊登上市公司與財經、法律機構的宣告事宜。

雖然《國內郵報》已有一百多年未刊登新聞報導,世界報紙協會仍將它視為現存的全世界最長壽報紙。

一月一日開始發行的電子報仍然是政府的官方新聞機構,這是瑞典法律賦予的地位,自十七世紀即沿用迄今。

《國內郵報》的新任總編輯羅南.海格朗德說︰「形式改變和過去大相逕庭,或許有人會有點感傷,但這也是大勢所趨。」

海格朗德相信,改採網路報將為這份報紙注入新生命。

海格朗德說︰「這想必會拓展我們的讀者群。現在所有上網者都可以免費閱讀《國內郵報》。」《國內郵報》今年初與瑞典公司註冊局Bolagsverket合作後,海格朗德是唯一的全職職員。

「你不能只無意間看到印刷版。現在所有人都有機會取得訊息。」
