Half of young Poles thinking about moving abroad 波蘭青年人多想移居國外

Half of Poles aged 18-24 are considering leaving home within the next two years to find a well-paid job abroad, according to a survey published by the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza.

According to the survey, about 20 percent of all adult Poles are also considering working abroad.

The number of people in Poland looking for work outside the country has gone up since Poland joined the EU on May 1, 2004. Estimates of total labor migration from Poland to other EU states are between several hundred thousand and 1 million. Poles mainly choose to go to Britain and Ireland.

The survey says that 54 percent of Poles have a family member who has gone to work abroad since Poland joined the EU.

Poles from all walks of life are looking for work abroad. Poland has the highest jobless rate in the entire 25-member EU at around 15 percent. The rate has dropped from around 20 percent over the last two years, partly because of the exodus of workers.

Hundreds of Poles eager to work in Ireland lined up around the block last month in Warsaw where the Irish National Training and Employment Authority (FAS) working with Irish construction companies was looking for Polish workers.

According to the Irish government, 140,000 Poles have gone to Ireland looking for work since Poland joined the European Union in May 2004.(DPA)

調查顯示,自從波蘭加入歐盟後,54% 的波蘭人有家族成員在海外工作。
