The Adventures of Kathleen the Great and Mark the Meek

    Saturday, Jun 17, 2006,Page 13

Meet Kathleen the mouse and Mark the elephant. Kathleen is very brave and likes adventure, but Mark is very shy and scared of many things. But friends stay together, so Mark follows Kathleen wherever she goes. Sometimes they get into some very sticky situations.

One morning, Kathleen woke up to the sound of bacon frying in the pan. She couldn't just hear it, she could smell it too.

"Oh no you don't!" yelled Kathleen as she ran into the kitchen to stop Mark. "Mark, you've been doing such a good job exercising. You don't want to ruin it all by eating stuff like bacon, do you?"

"What's the point of exercising if I can't eat delicious things like bacon?" Mark asked.

"OK, fine. Because you've been working hard and it's Saturday, you can have bacon just this one time. But you have to eat some fruit and drink a glass of milk too!"

"I'll drink the milk, but I'm putting chocolate in it," Mark answered.

Kathleen gave him a warning look. Mark settled down to eat his breakfast, and Kathleen decided that if Mark was going to splurge, she could too. She took a big piece of cheese out of the refrigerator and sat down to eat her breakfast.

"Are you finished yet?" she asked after she had eaten the last bit of cheese.

    "Yes, I am," answered Mark.

"Good, now let's get outside and exercise!"

"Not just yet," answered Mark, relaxing on the couch. "Cartoons first. Come on, it's Saturday."
