Who would you rather be in this picture, the horse or the man riding the horse? Both look like they are working pretty hard. This man and this horse are competing in a rodeo. Rodeos are held so that people can show their skill at handling horses and cows.

In English, people who have these skills are called cowboys. Many people think of cowboys as very American, but actually cowboys originally came from Mexico, a Spanish-speaking country. Cowboys there are called vaqueros. Cowboys spread from Mexico into the US, but they also spread south into other Spanish-speaking countries. In many of those countries, people who practice handling cows and horses, like the man in this picture, are called gauchos. (Kayleen Hartman, Staff Writer)
