Blinders on White Terror

The White Terror period affected so many people in Taiwan so deeply, and yet beyond some superficial apologies by the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), it has never been acknowledged in anything approaching its proper scope and depth.

My sense is that such an apology won’t happen and so if there is to be any sort of meaningful accounting, it will have to come from the continuation and expansion of efforts at the grassroots level that have managed to keep this dark history in the public eye, ie, through direct action by community organizations and family networks working in concert.

That may, at some point, push the government to do more, especially if the Democratic Progressive Party returns to the reins of the Presidential Office after next month’s presidential election.
