LETTERS: The other mercury risk
Sunday, Mar 30, 2008, Page 8
If the director-general of the Environmental Protection Administration's (EPA) solid waste program Ho Soong-chin (何舜琴) is right in his assertion that "mercury is a toxic compound that accumulates in the body. Even the smallest amount could be dangerous to the health," then the EPA should ban fluorescent light bulbs, which can only produce light because of the mercury they contain.
How many millions of fluorescent light bulbs are carelessly dumped, releasing mercury into the environment? Banning incandescent light bulbs certainly might save a little energy, but their replacement with fluorescent light bulbs would have a high cost to the environment and our health.
