Letter: Stand up for democracy

By Bill Parkhurst

It was good to see someone in the People First Party (PFP) strike back at Chairman James Soong's (宋楚瑜) attempts to sell the party back to the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) so that he can secure a place on the next presidential ticket.

Those PFP members left the KMT to make an important statement about politics in Taiwan.

What good is democracy to the average citizen if politicians routinely buy and sell votes behind the scenes?

Taiwanese need to feel that the democratic process is more than warmed-over dictatorship served up on a new plate.

The public needs to tell the nation's politicians that this type of posturing is wholly unacceptable.
