    Boycott the Beijing Olympics

    By Marc Plumb

    Thursday, Mar 03, 2005, Page 8

If China passes its ridiculous "anti-secession" law, one possible response from Taiwan worth considering is to boycott the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Just think of the media exposure this boycott will get. For the next three years, every time the Beijing Olympics are mentioned in the news, Taiwan will also be mentioned. The world will be constantly reminded that Taiwan is independent from China and has its own laws and Constitution.

It would be best if this action is based on a snap referendum to show it is the people's will, not just government policy. In the long term, it will be a negative legacy for the games that China still disregards human rights and freedom.

Some may argue that this action would mix sports with politics, but it would not be the first time. Apart from considering the way the Chinese government and people may treat Taiwanese-owned businesses in China, Taiwan does not have much to lose, since its flag and anthem are not allowed anyway. On the business side, money still has to be made, since many companies are publicly traded.

I think Taiwan's anthem actually has a very nice melody. I have it drilled into my head from all the movies I watched here years ago.

Perhaps Taiwan should have a contest to compose new and more meaningful words to the song during this time, so that people here will be reminded of the sacrifice made.

Perhaps as a temporary message, activists can replace the star on the flag with a peace symbol to show the world that Taiwan only wants peace and stability. It would be a good image to get the message across in the media.
