Mediatek Inc (聯發科), a local chip designer for mobile handsets, compact disk players and DVD players, is scheduled to showcase its new IC products for WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) applications for the first time at today’s Broadband Taiwan event.
The company will display three second-generation IEEE 802.16e WiMAX chips during the three-day show at Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall 3, Mediatek said last week.
With the collaboration of its partners, the Hsinchu-based company will also demonstrate dual-mode smartphones, which support both GSM and WiMAX technologies by integrating its WiMAX chips and baseband processors.
WiMAX is a data telecommunications standard for notebook computers, mobile phones and other portable devices. The government has selected WiMAX as part of its M-Taiwan (mobile Taiwan) program to promote seamless wireless broadband communication.
By 2012, Taiwan will invest about US$3 billion in the WiMAX industry, the Industrial Development Bureau said.
With government support, local manufacturers, including Mediatek, Acer Inc (宏碁), Accton Technology Corp (智邦科技), Mitac Inc (神通), Tatung Co (大同), Tecom Co (東訊), Gemtek Technology Co (正文科技) and Zyxel Communications Corp (合勤), have been tapping the new market, and will exhibit related products at the show, along with those featured by the nation’s six WiMAX license holders, said the event’s organizer, Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA, 外貿協會).
The six service operators are Far EasTone Telecommunications Co (遠傳電信), First International Telecom Corp (大眾電信), Global Mobile Corp (全球一動), Tatung InfoComm Co (大同電信), Vee Telecom Multimedia Co Ltd (威達超舜) and VMAX Telecom Co (威邁思電信).
