Starbucks coffee mugs marketed in this country are entirely ceramic, and none use plastic handles like those recently recalled in the US over to a burn hazard, executives of President Starbucks Coffee Corp (統一星巴克) said yesterday.
President Starbucks Coffee is a joint venture between the Seattle-headquartered Starbucks Coffee Co and Uni-President Group (統一集團), created in 1998.
In response to media inquiries about the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announcement on Thursday of a voluntary recall of Starbucks fusion coffee mugs -- which are white mugs with black plastic handles and a stainless-steel base -- Starbucks managers in Taiwan underlined that the China-made mugs have not been imported into this country.
They said many Starbucks' products are only marketed in the US, including the recalled mugs.
The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection of the Ministry of Economic Affairs also said its preliminary inspection showed no sign of such mugs on sale in this country, the ministry said in statement yesterday.
The CPSC said the white plastic handle of the recalled mugs could detach when the mug is filled with hot liquids, posing a minor burn hazard to consumers.
Starbucks has received 23 reports of handles detaching from the mug, including nine that resulted in minor burns, the CPSC said in its Web site announcement.
