Investment in the Southern Taiwan Science Park (南部科學園區) in Tainan County has continued to increase with the number of companies operating there and turnover also increasing, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said yesterday.
As of Sept. 30 this year, the number of companies operating in the science park has increased to 102 from less then 30 in 2002 when the park was inaugurated, ministry officials said.
Turnover in the science park reached NT$100 billion (US$3.06 billion) in the first nine months of this year, compared to NT$6.4 billion in 2002, the officials said.
They added that for the entire year, turnover in the park is expected to top NT$120 billion.
As of Sept. 30 this year the park had created 12,000 job opportunities, they said. A construction project scheduled for completion in 2009 is expected to create a further 15,000 jobs.
Construction of the seven-story building -- which will house a conference and exhibition hall, a bank, a post office, convenience stores and several restaurants -- will begin later this month, the officials said.
